And there's a thirty-year-old art festival downtown that out-of-towners walk right past.

This guide covers what's actually happening for Memorial Day weekend in Wilmington (May 22-25, 2026), where to drink, where to eat without an hour wait, and how to plan the weekend so you're not stuck on the Wrightsville Beach causeway at sunset.

Memorial Day Observance Memorial Day Ceremony in Wilmington, NC

Memorial Day honors U.S. service members who died in service. The federal holiday falls on the last Monday of May, which in 2026 is Monday, May 25.

The biggest public commemoration in the area is the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA's annual observance, now in its 62nd year. The ceremony runs Monday morning at 10:30 AM on the ship's fantail, the open deck at the stern. It's free and open to the public, no ticket needed.

The 2026 program features Vice Admiral John G. Morgan Jr., U.S. Navy (Retired) as military guest of honor and keynote speaker Becky Aikman, author of Spitfires, a book about the women who flew combat aircraft for the British in World War II. The Brunswick Brass Band performs patriotic music and a memorial wreath is cast into the Cape Fear River.

The whole thing runs about an hour. Held weather permitting. Address is 1 Battleship Road NE, just across the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge from downtown. Free parking on site, but the lot fills early for this. Get there by 10 AM. Dress respectfully (collared shirts, no swimwear, no flip-flops). The fantail is exposed to the sun, so bring water if it's hot. Worth knowing the day comes with full ship admission discounts for active military and veterans, year-round. Full details and updates on the Battleship's event page.

Boardwalk Blast Fireworks Carolina Beach Memorial Day Weekend Fireworks

The summer fireworks season at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk kicks off Friday, May 22 with the Boardwalk Blast Kickoff. Free. Live music at the boardwalk Gazebo Stage starts at 6:30 PM, fireworks promptly at 9 PM, the whole thing wraps by 9:30. The 2026 kickoff act is Beatlesque, a Beatles tribute band.

The series runs every Thursday through Labor Day after this, but the Memorial Day kickoff is the biggest. It's the first fireworks of the season and everyone on Pleasure Island shows up. Best viewing is on the beach strand directly in front of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk. Bring chairs or a blanket. Coolers are fine on the beach but no glass and no alcohol on public beach access (Carolina Beach is a dry beach, you'll need to drink at the bars or your rental). Full schedule and artist lineup on the official event page.

Treat this like a full evening, not just a fireworks show. The boardwalk arcade, food stands, and bars all stay open late. Arrive by 5 PM at the latest, eat dinner from the boardwalk vendors, ride a few rides, then settle in on the sand by 8:30 for fireworks.

If you've never had Britt's Donuts, this is the night to fix it. They've been on the boardwalk since 1939 making one thing: hot glazed yeast donuts. The line wraps around. None of that matters. Eat them in the car if you have to. Cash only.

For something cold after, Celtic Creamery a few blocks off the boardwalk turns out small-batch ice cream from recipes brought over from Ireland. Squigley's Ice Cream & Treats is right on the boardwalk and stays open late.

Local TipParking near the boardwalk starts filling by mid-afternoon. The big public lots (Cape Fear Boulevard, Boardwalk lot) run around $5/hour with ParkMobile. If you arrive after 5 PM, expect to walk 5-10 blocks. The Carolina Beach parking guide has the full lot-by-lot breakdown.
