America 250 in Wilmington, NC: What to See and Do

America 250 in Wilmington, NC: What to See and Do

The United States turns 250 in 2026, and Wilmington has a real claim to the celebration. This isn't a city that slapped a flag on a strip mall and called it patriotic. Wilmington was a colonial port town founded in 1739. The Cape Fear region played a direct role in the lead-up to the American Revolution, and many of those sites are still standing, still open, and worth visiting whether you care about history or not.

Here's what's happening around Wilmington for America 250, and the historic places worth seeing while you're here.

Historic Sites Worth Visiting in Wilmington

These aren't dusty museums with roped-off furniture. Most of these are walkable from downtown, and several offer guided tours that are genuinely interesting.

Burgwin-Wright House

Burgwin-Wright House is Wilmington's only colonial house museum, built in 1770. During the Revolutionary War, British General Cornwallis used it as his headquarters. The house runs guided tours Tuesday through Saturday, and the gardens are worth the stop on their own. They're also running special "Colonial Wilmington & The Revolution" walking tours throughout 2026 on March 13, June 12, September 11, and December 11.

Bellamy Mansion

Bellamy Mansion is one of the most impressive antebellum homes in the state. The guided tour covers both the main house and the restored slave quarters, and it doesn't sugarcoat anything. About 45 minutes, well worth the admission.

Battleship North Carolina

Battleship North Carolina is running special Hidden Battleship Tours throughout 2026 as part of the America 250 programming. These go into areas of the ship not normally open to the public. The ship also received a special America 250 historical marker dedication honoring the Forgotten Patriots of the Revolutionary War. Even without the special events, the Battleship is one of the most visited attractions in the area and takes 2-3 hours to explore.

Latimer House Museum

Latimer House is a Victorian Italianate townhouse from 1852. Smaller and quicker than Bellamy Mansion but worth the stop if you're doing a downtown history day.

Brunswick Town / Fort Anderson

About 20 minutes south of downtown, Brunswick Town is the site of the first permanent settlement in the Cape Fear region. It later became Fort Anderson during the Civil War. The ruins, walking trails, and interpretive displays make for a solid half-day trip, especially combined with Fort Fisher.

Moore's Creek National Battlefield

About 25 minutes northwest of Wilmington, Moore's Creek is where Patriot forces defeated a Loyalist army in February 1776 in a brief but decisive battle. Historians call it "the Lexington and Concord of the South." It's a National Park site with walking trails, a reconstructed bridge, a visitor center, and free admission. This site is at the center of the Cape Fear region's America 250 celebration, and the 250th anniversary of the actual battle was commemorated in February 2026 with the inaugural First in Freedom Festival.

Fort Fisher State Historic Site

Fort Fisher protected Wilmington's port during the Civil War and was the site of one of the war's largest amphibious battles. The museum, earthwork remains, and beach setting make it one of the most interesting historic sites in the area.

America 250 Events in Wilmington

Events and programming are being added throughout 2026. Here are the confirmed highlights:

July 4th on the Riverwalk

The big one. The City of Wilmington's annual 4th of July celebration at Riverfront Park includes the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra performing a Pops concert starting at 7:30 PM, food vendors, kids' activities, and fireworks launched from a barge at the convergence of the Cape Fear and Northeast Cape Fear Rivers at 9:00 PM. Gates open at 5:00 PM. The fireworks are visible along the entire 2-mile Riverwalk. This year's event is officially part of the America 250 celebration.

For parking tips, check our Downtown Wilmington guide. Short version: park in one of the downtown decks early and walk. Don't try to park near Riverfront Park after 6 PM.

NC Symphony America 250 Concert

The North Carolina Symphony is performing a Stars & Stripes celebration at The Wilson Center on July 2. Patriotic classics and a program honoring America's 250th. Tickets through the Wilson Center box office.

Warbirds Over Wilmington

WWII aircraft displays and flight demonstrations at Wilmington International Airport, hosted by the Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. The lineup includes a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, a U.S. Navy SNJ trainer, and a rare Japanese A6M Zero fighter built for the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora!" The Zero performed a simulated attack on the Battleship North Carolina to commemorate the Battle of Guadalcanal.

First in Freedom Festival Passport

The First in Freedom Festival Passport program runs all 2026. Pick up a physical passport booklet at participating locations in Wilmington (Airlie Gardens, Battleship NC, Bellamy Mansion, Burgwin-Wright House, Cameron Art Museum, Children's Museum, Fort Fisher, Latimer House, Wilmington Railroad Museum), visit the sites, collect stamps, and earn prizes. It covers eight southeastern NC counties and is a genuinely fun way to explore the region's history, especially with kids.

Walking Tours and Special Programming

The Burgwin-Wright House is running quarterly "Colonial Wilmington & The Revolution" walking tours. Wilmington Water Tours offers an Outlander-themed tour exploring the real Scottish roots of the Cape Fear region. Thalian Hall staged "1776 The Musical" earlier in the year, and more theater productions and lectures are being added throughout 2026.

Eat and drink the revolution

Flying Machine Brewing released First In Freedom: Battlefield Ale, a commemorative America 250 brew available at the brewery and participating locations around town. Cape Fear Spice Merchants made a special tea blend honoring the Cape Fear Women's Tea Protest, which happened right here in downtown Wilmington. If you want to keep the theme going over dinner, Rebellion on Front Street has the right name for the occasion.

How to Plan an America 250 Day in Wilmington

If you want to hit the highlights in one day:

Start at Burgwin-Wright House for a morning tour. Walk to Bellamy Mansion (it's a few blocks). Lunch somewhere downtown. Afternoon at the Battleship. If you have time, drive to Moore's Creek National Battlefield before it closes. Evening on the Riverwalk.

For a deeper history trip, add Brunswick Town and Fort Fisher on a second day. Both are south of Wilmington and can be combined with a beach stop at Kure or Fort Fisher.

Pick up the First in Freedom Passport at any participating location and start collecting stamps as you go. It gives the day a structure, especially if you're with kids who need a goal beyond "look at old stuff."
