It's going to rain. This is coastal North Carolina. Your beach day will get cancelled at least once during your trip. The good news: Wilmington has enough indoor stuff to fill a rainy day without resorting to sitting in your hotel watching cable.

Wilmington Museums and Indoor Attractions

Children's Museum of Wilmington

If you have kids under 10, the Children's Museum is the rainy day answer. Four floors of hands-on exhibits, play areas, and interactive stations. a small admission fee. Warning: every other parent in Wilmington has the same idea on rainy days, so it gets packed. Go early.

Cameron Art Museum

Cameron Art Museum has rotating exhibitions that punch well above the museum's size. The on-site cafe (Forks Cafeteria) is genuinely good food, not museum cafeteria slop. You can eat there without paying museum admission. Check their website for free admission days.

Bellamy Mansion

Bellamy Mansion is one of the most impressive antebellum homes in North Carolina. Guided tours run about 45 minutes and cover both the mansion and the restored slave quarters. It's a real, honest look at pre-Civil War life. admission charged.

Burgwin-Wright House

Burgwin-Wright House is Wilmington's only colonial house museum, built in 1770. Cornwallis used it as his headquarters during the Revolutionary War. Tours run Tuesday through Saturday.

Battleship North Carolina

The Battleship is partially covered but involves a lot of climbing and outdoor areas. In a light rain it's still doable. In a downpour, you'll get soaked on the open decks. Check the forecast and use your judgment. The interior areas (crew quarters, engine rooms) are dry and fascinating.

Latimer House Museum

Latimer House is a Victorian Italianate townhouse from 1852 with period furnishings. Smaller and quicker than Bellamy Mansion but worth the stop if you're doing a downtown history day.

Indoor Entertainment in Wilmington

Thalian Hall

Thalian Hall is one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the country, dating to 1858. Check their calendar for plays, concerts, comedy, and film screenings. The ornate Victorian interior is worth seeing even if you're not into the show.

The Wilson Center

The Wilson Center brings in Broadway touring productions, major concerts, and big-name comedians. State-of-the-art venue, excellent sound. Check what's playing.

Jengo's Playhouse

Jengo's Playhouse does movie screenings, comedy nights, and live music in an intimate space on Princess Street.

Club Golf Indoor

Club Golf Indoor has simulator bays for golf. Good for a couple hours, especially if you're the type who planned to golf and the rain killed it.

Shops Worth Browsing Downtown

  • Memory Lane Comics - Two storefronts on Princess Street. Comics, graphic novels, vintage toys. Easy to lose an hour.
  • The Fuzzy Needle - Books and vinyl records on S 17th Street. The kind of shop that makes you buy things you didn't know you needed.
  • Cotton Exchange - Shops and restaurants in a converted cotton exchange building downtown.
  • The ArtWorks - Artist studios and gallery on Willard Street. Browse, watch artists work, buy something original.

How to Plan a Rainy Day in Wilmington

Pick a brewery, pick a museum, and eat somewhere downtown in between. That's a full rainy day that doesn't feel like a consolation prize. Wilmington is just as good indoors as it is on the beach. Different, but just as good.
