Wilmington's brewery scene keeps shifting. Edward Teach Brewing permanently closed in February 2026 after 8 years. Flying Machine opened a second location — Flying Machine Oyster Bar at 530 Causeway Drive, Wrightsville Beach, focused on coastal cuisine with their beers on tap. Wrightsville Beach Brewery has announced a second location, Brunswick Beer and Cider, coming to Leland.
Wilmington has quietly become one of the better craft beer towns in North Carolina. There are 15+ breweries in the area, each with their own personality. This isn't a "Top 10 Best" listicle - it's actual info about each spot so you can figure out which ones fit what you're looking for.
Downtown & Nearby
Front Street Brewery
Address: 9 N Front St, Wilmington
Front Street Brewery is the OG - been here since 1995, making it North Carolina's oldest brewery restaurant. It's right on Front Street downtown in a historic building.
The beer: They do a range - IPAs, wheat beers, stouts, lagers. Solid but not experimental. The Dram Tree Brown Ale and Front Street Pale Ale are their flagships. They rotate seasonal stuff. Not trying to blow your mind with triple-hopped imperial whatever, just making good beer.
The food: Full restaurant menu. Pub food but better than typical bar food - fish and chips, burgers, steaks, seafood. You can eat a real meal here, not just snacks.
The space: Two stories. Downstairs bar area and restaurant, upstairs more dining. Brick walls, brewing equipment visible. Gets busy on weekend nights.
Good for: Dinner and drinks, groups, downtown starting point. If you're with people who don't love beer, the restaurant menu means everyone's happy.
Hours: Generally 11am-10pm or later depending on day. Check for current hours.
Parking: Street parking or downtown lots. Typical downtown parking situation.
Flytrap Brewing
Address: 319 Walnut St, Wilmington
Flytrap Brewing is named after the Venus flytrap, the carnivorous plant native to this region. They've leaned into the theme - actual flytraps in the brewery.
The beer: Good variety with some creativity. They do a solid Gooseberry Gose (tart, slightly salty, fruity), good stouts, IPAs. They're not afraid to experiment. Usually 10-12 beers on tap.
The food: No kitchen, but food trucks rotate through regularly. Check their social media for the schedule. You can also bring outside food.
The space: Warehouse vibe, high ceilings, concrete floors. Not fancy but comfortable. Dog-friendly in the taproom. They've expanded since opening and have decent space now.
Good for: Beer nerds who want variety, casual hangouts, bringing your dog. If you want to actually taste some different styles, this is a good spot.
Hours: Generally open afternoon through evening, later on weekends. Closed Mondays (verify current schedule).
Parking: Street parking and a small lot. Can be tight on busy nights.
Ironclad Brewery
Address: 115 N 2nd St, Wilmington
Ironclad Brewery is located in a historic downtown firehouse - the building is genuinely cool. Exposed brick, old firehouse details, lots of character.
The beer: Solid lineup with some standouts. Their IPAs are good, they do a nice lager, rotating seasonals. Not super experimental but consistently good quality.
The food: Small food menu - shareables, snacks. Enough to go with beer but not a full restaurant.
The space: This is the draw. The firehouse building is beautiful. Two levels, outdoor seating. Gets loud when packed. The architecture makes it worth visiting even if the beer were average (it's not, it's good).
Good for: Date nights, out-of-town visitors who'd appreciate the building, downtown bar hopping.
Hours: Tuesday-Sunday, closed Mondays. Afternoon through late evening.
Parking: Downtown parking situation - street or lots.
Waterline Brewing
Address: 721 Surry St, Wilmington
Waterline Brewing Co. sits right along the water near the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge in the Cargo District. The view is the thing here.
The beer: Solid range - Kolsch, IPAs, oatmeal stout, Belgian-style tripel. They're consistent and the beer is good without being gimmicky.
The food: Food trucks regularly, no in-house kitchen. Check schedule.
The space: The outdoor beer garden is why people come. You're looking right at the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. Sunset here is great. Inside is fine but the patio is the move. They do sunset sessions with acoustic music sometimes.
Good for: Sunset drinks, casual hangs with a view, outdoor drinking. If weather's nice, this is one of the better spots in town.
Hours: Generally afternoon through evening.
Parking: Has a parking lot, way easier than downtown spots.
Note: They sometimes do outdoor yoga before opening on weekends. Very Wilmington.
Wilmington Brewing Company
Address: 824 S Kerr Ave, Wilmington
Wilmington Brewing Company is a bigger operation, not downtown. Been around since 2014, one of the more established local breweries.
The beer: Wide range - everything from light lagers to big stouts. Their Coastal Kolsch is popular, the IPAs are solid, they do some creative seasonals. Usually 15+ beers on tap. They can and distribute, so you might see their stuff in stores too.
The food: They allow outside food and have food trucks. PT's Grille is right down the street if you want to grab something and bring it back.
The space: Warehouse vibe, lots of room. Not fancy but comfortable. Games available. Dog-friendly in the taproom. Good for groups because there's space.
Good for: Groups, people who want variety, casual afternoons. If you've got 8 people and want to spread out, this works.

The beer: 24 taps with Ponysaurus house beers plus a mix of others. Full bar too - beer cocktails, liquor, wine. Their beers get distributed across NC, SC, and TN so you might already know them.
The food: Actually a pizzeria and beer garden, not just a brewery with snacks. Pizza, burgers, wings, sandwiches, apps. Food is a real part of the draw, not an afterthought. Weekly deals: half-price wings Mondays, $10 one-topping pizzas Tuesdays, half-price burgers Wednesdays.
The space: Downtown location with a terraced beer garden. Indoor seating too. Modern vibe, dog-friendly patio.
Good for: Date night, groups wanting real food with craft beer, downtown pub crawl stop. Monday trivia night draws a regular crowd.
Hours: Generally noon or later through evening, varies by day.
Parking: Downtown street parking and paid lots. Usually manageable but tighter on weekends.

The food: Food trucks regularly. Check their schedule.
The space: The outdoor beer garden is the highlight. Dog-friendly, shaded areas, comfortable. Indoor taproom is fine but the garden is the draw. They host events out there.

The space: Big - 7,920 sq ft. Games (ping pong, foosball, shuffleboard). Former car dealership space. Dog-friendly. Feels like a place you can hang for a while.

By The Beach Brewing
Address: 104 Old Eastwood Road, Wilmington
By The Beach Brewing is a family-owned, small-batch brewery that opened in September 2023. Owners Guy Gulutz and Kim Findley relocated from Long Island and started this as a true passion project — Guy's the head brewer, Kim handles the vibe and event bookings.
The beer: About 10 beers rotating across their 3-barrel system. Creative naming (Hoppy Wife Hoppy Life IPA, Dread Pirate, Goin' Bananas wheat beer, Under the Kilt Scottish Ale) and they lean into seasonals. Quality is solid for a small operation — got positive writeups from regional beer reviewers.
The food: Food trucks rotate, or bring your own.
The space: Cozy 4,000 sq ft taproom with a full game lineup — pool, darts, cornhole, board games, and even a Nintendo Switch. They host live music and special events like "Frankenstein Friday." The kind of place where the owner will probably come talk to you about the beer.
Good for: People who want a local-feeling, neighborhood brewery experience. Not flashy, not trying to be — just a good hang.
Hours: Closed Monday and Tuesday. Wed-Fri afternoon through evening, Sat noon-9pm, Sun noon-8pm.
Parking: Has parking.
DrumTrout Brewing Company
Address: 3710 S College Road, Suite 143, Wilmington
DrumTrout Brewing is a family-owned microbrewery in the Pine Valley area, named after the owners' first boat. Ali and Joe Bagwell opened it in May 2022 and upgraded from a 3-barrel to a 5-barrel system in 2024 to keep up with demand. Joe was previously at Bill's Brewing Company, so he's not new to this.
The beer: 12 rotating taps — IPAs and hazy IPAs, pales, kolsch, blonde ales, stouts, porters, fruited sours, and hard seltzers. They also carry wine, cider, and kombucha for non-beer drinkers. Small-batch approach means the menu keeps evolving.
The food: Food trucks rotate.
The space: Coastal-themed taproom with teal floors that make you feel like you're walking on water. The outdoor patio has picnic tables, adirondacks, and outdoor heaters for cooler months. End-of-strip-mall location, but the outdoor seating is the highlight. Kid and dog-friendly.
Good for: Locals looking for a neighborhood spot between downtown and Carolina Beach. Pine Valley residents basically have a walk-to brewery.

The food: Food trucks or bring your own.
The space: Family and dog-friendly. Has a DISC GOLF COURSE behind the brewery - Trinity Disc Golf Course, 18 holes, free to play (bring your own discs or borrow a pair of loaner discs inside the taproom). This makes it unique.

Wilmington Distillery

Brunswick Beer Exchange - if you're on the Brunswick County side of the river, this is where you stop for craft beer.
Bowstring Burgers and Brewyard
Address: 1002 Princess St, Wilmington
Bowstring is less of a brewery and more of a live music venue / burger joint with a big craft beer tap list, but worth knowing about since it's in the Soda Pop District near Hi-Wire. Founded in July 2023 by the same team behind Bowstring Raleigh. The building was a former Coca-Cola bottling plant for Electric Soda and Orange Crush — they've restored it beautifully.
The beer: Extensive tap list of local and regional craft beer (doesn't brew their own). Solid rotation.
The food: Fresh beef burgers, chicken, wraps, tots — real kitchen, not bar snacks. Order at touchscreen kiosks.
The space: 9,800 sq ft with a covered patio, indoor/outdoor bar, and a turfed "brewyard" with yard games and a live music stage. Serious sound system for a bar — they book nationally-touring acts regularly.
Good for: Live music nights, burgers and beer, groups. Family and dog-friendly (unless it's a ticketed 21+ event).
Hours: Closed Mondays. Tues-Sun 11am onward, later on weekends.
Practical Brewery Info
Tipping: Yes, tip your bartenders. Standard bar tipping applies.
Flights: Almost all of them offer flight options if you want to try multiple beers. Usually 4-6 small pours. Good way to sample.
Growlers/Crowlers: Most fill growlers or sell crowlers (canned beer to go). Good way to take beer home.
Dogs: Many are dog-friendly, especially in outdoor areas. Usually just outdoor spaces, not always inside. Ask if unsure.
Kids: Many allow kids, especially during daytime/early evening. Gets more adults-only later at night. Breweries with food (Front Street, Wrightsville Beach Brewery) are more family-dinner friendly.
Food trucks: Most breweries without kitchens have regular food truck schedules. Check their Facebook/Instagram for what's coming.
Brewery hopping: Downtown spots (Front Street, Flytrap, Ironclad, New Anthem) are walkable from each other. For others, you'll need a car or rideshare. Please don't drink and drive.
