What to Pack for the Carolina Beach Wrestling Nationals (Spectator & Family Edition)

Heading to Carolina Beach for the Wrestling Nationals? The competition happens on open sand with no shade structures, right off the boardwalk. May in coastal North Carolina is warm, sunny, and windy. Pack wrong and you'll spend the day sunburned, dehydrated, and buying overpriced sunscreen from a boardwalk gift shop.

Here's what to bring - and what the boardwalk vendors will try to charge you $30 for that you can grab on Amazon right now for $10.

The Must-Haves (Don't Leave Home Without These)

Sunscreen

You're sitting on open sand for 4-8 hours. There is zero shade at the competition area. You will burn. Boardwalk gift shops charge $15-18 for a single bottle. A Blue Lizard SPF 50+ 2-pack is about $25 on Amazon - toss one in the beach bag, one in the car. Reapply every 2 hours because sand and water reflect UV and you'll burn faster than you expect.

Insulated Water Bottle

Staying hydrated in the sun all day is non-negotiable. Boardwalk vendors charge $4-6 for a bottle of water. An Owala FreeSip 24oz insulated bottle is about $30, keeps ice cold for hours, and pays for itself in two events. Fill it at the hotel before you leave.

Beach Chair

You'll be watching from the beach or boardwalk. Standing for 6 hours isn't happening. Boardwalk chair rentals run $15/day. A Tommy Bahama lay-flat backpack beach chair is about $75 but you own it forever and it folds flat for the walk from the parking lot.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

Sand, sunscreen, and water are phone killers. You're checking brackets on FloWrestling, taking photos, and using ParkMobile all day. A waterproof phone pouch (2-pack) is $8 and saves your phone from a sandy, sunscreen-y death.

The Smart Adds (You'll Be Glad You Packed These)

Portable Phone Charger

All-day photo/video, texting family, checking brackets, using ParkMobile for parking - your phone will die by 2 PM. A BLAVOR solar power bank is about $27 and has wireless charging so you're not fumbling with cables on the sand.

Cooling Towels

May in coastal NC can hit low 80s. Wet a cooling towel, drape it around your neck, and you'll drop your perceived temperature by 10 degrees. A 4-pack of cooling towels is about $7. Enough for the whole family.

Sand-Free Beach Blanket

If you don't want to bring a chair, a WEKAPO sand-free beach blanket is about $20. Compact, lightweight, waterproof on the bottom, and sand actually falls through instead of sticking to everything.

Cooler Backpack

Snacks, water, and drinks for the family. Buying everything from boardwalk vendors for a family of four adds up fast. A Maelstrom insulated cooler backpack is about $36 and holds 35 cans. Load it up at Harris Teeter or Walmart in Wilmington on the way in. Carolina Beach grocery options are limited and overpriced.

Beach Shade

If shade structures are allowed in spectator areas (check event rules first), a Gorich pop-up beach tent is about $37 and gives your family shade without staking out a full canopy.

Cash

Britt's Donuts is cash only. Some smaller boardwalk vendors are cash-only or have card minimums. Have at least $20-30 in small bills.

What NOT to Bring

Alcohol. Illegal on Carolina Beach sand. They enforce it.

Glass containers. Prohibited on the beach.

Your dog. Dogs are not allowed on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk or in the Boardwalk Business District. Ever. Leave them at the hotel or with family.

A giant shade tent or canopy. Check event rules before bringing one - spectator shade structures may be restricted in the competition viewing area.

Valuables you can't watch. You're on a public beach. Don't leave wallets, phones, or expensive gear unattended on a blanket.

Wrestler-Specific Packing

If you're competing (not just spectating), you'll also want:

  • Wrestling shoes (for warm-up - competition is barefoot on sand)
  • Multiple changes of clothes - you will be covered in sand
  • Towels - plural, at least two
  • Post-weigh-in fuel - protein bars, bananas, Pedialyte, whatever your refuel routine is
  • Skin tape or athletic tape - sand + grappling = skin abrasion
  • Flip flops or slides - for walking to/from the sand circle
  • Warm-up layers - May mornings on the coast can be cooler than you expect
