What to Do Between Matches at the Carolina Beach Wrestling Nationals
You made the trip to Carolina Beach for the Wrestling Nationals. Competition doesn't run all day, your athlete just finished their bracket, and now you've got a few hours to kill before the next round - or the rest of the family needs something to do while one kid competes.
Here's what's actually worth your time within walking distance or a short drive from the boardwalk.
Walking Distance from the Boardwalk
Britt's Donuts
The line is worth it. Britt's has been on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk since 1939, serving hot glazed donuts fresh from the fryer. Cash only. Seasonal hours - they're typically open by May. If your wrestler just weighed in and is looking for the fastest possible calorie reload, this is the answer.
Boardwalk Arcade & Rides
The boardwalk has old-school arcade games, skee-ball, claw machines, and a handful of small rides for younger kids. Not Disneyland, but solid for burning an hour with siblings who couldn't care less about wrestling.
The Beach
It's right there. Bring towels, chairs, and sunscreen - between matches, the sand is your lounge. May in Carolina Beach is warm enough for the beach but not yet peak-summer packed.
Boardwalk Restaurants
When you need real food between brackets:
- Britt's Donuts - Legendary glazed donuts. Cash only.
- Sunny Daze Smokehouse - BBQ and live music.
- Hurricane Alley's CB - Seafood, cocktails, good vibes.
- Nauti Dog - Gourmet hot dogs. Vegan and gluten-free options.
- Kate's Pancake House - Breakfast favorite. Great post-wrestling fuel.
- Pop's Diner - Carolina Beach's only late-night diner. Open seven days.
Short Drive (15-20 Minutes)
NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher
About 15 minutes south on the island. Great rainy day backup or rest-day activity, especially with younger kids. Plan 2-3 hours. Check out our full Fort Fisher Aquarium guide for ticket prices, parking, and what to see.
Fort Fisher State Historic Site
Free. Right near the aquarium. Walk the massive Civil War earthwork remains and visit the small museum. Takes about an hour. Surprisingly interesting even if history isn't your thing.
Fort Fisher - Southport Ferry
A 30-45 minute ferry ride across the Cape Fear River to the town of Southport. Cute downtown, waterfront restaurants, slower pace. Good for a half-day trip if you've got Friday free before competition.
Carolina Beach State Park
Hike the Flytrap Trail to see Venus flytraps growing wild. Carolina Beach is one of only a few places on Earth where they grow natively. Short, easy trail, good for all ages. Free to enter.
Shipwreck Neon Mini Golf
Indoor blacklight mini golf. Great for younger kids, rainy afternoons, or anyone who needs to NOT be on the beach for an hour. Located at 113 N Lake Park Blvd.
If You've Got an Entire Rest Day
Downtown Wilmington & the Riverwalk
About 20 minutes north. Walk the 1.75-mile Riverwalk along the Cape Fear River, explore the historic district, eat at actual restaurants (not boardwalk food), and check out shops and galleries. See our Downtown Wilmington & Riverwalk guide for the breakdown.
Wrightsville Beach
If you want a different beach vibe, Wrightsville Beach is about 30 minutes north. More upscale, great restaurants, surf shops, and a different feel from Carolina Beach.
Wilmington Attractions for Kids
If siblings or family members need entertainment that has nothing to do with wrestling:
- Children's Museum of Wilmington - Hands-on play museum, ages 0-10
- Battleship North Carolina - Explore a WWII battleship, plan 2+ hours
- Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park - Water park, laser tag, mini golf, go-karts
Full list in our Things to Do with Kids in Wilmington NC guide.
What to Do Saturday Night After Competition
The official post-tournament social is at Good Hops Brewing (811 Harper Ave) starting at 6 PM. Family and dog-friendly, disc golf course out back, woman-owned and woman-brewed.
If you want more options:
- The Tropical - Three-story spot with a rooftop bar on the boardwalk
- Silver Dollar / Top Dollar - Casual bar food and drinks
- Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar - Oceanfront dining on a pier
If you're willing to drive into Wilmington, the downtown bar and restaurant scene is significantly bigger. Front Street and the blocks around it have everything from craft cocktails to dive bars.
