Things to Do with Kids in Wilmington NC: The Detailed Family Guide

Kids playing in the sand on a Wilmington NC beach

Keeping kids entertained in Wilmington is actually pretty easy - beach, aquarium, done. But when you want more than that, or when the weather doesn't cooperate, you need options. Here's the real breakdown of family activities, with enough detail that you can actually plan.

The Big Attractions

NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher

Address: 900 Loggerhead Rd, Kure Beach Best for ages: 3-12 (toddlers get something out of it, teens might be "too cool")

The real deal: The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher is legit. Touch tanks where kids can pet stingrays and horseshoe crabs. A 235,000-gallon main tank with sharks and sea turtles. Luna the albino alligator. Sea turtle rehabilitation (real conservation work, not just show).

Time needed: 2-3 hours with kids. They'll want to do the touch tanks multiple times.

Cost: Adults ~$13, Kids ~$11, Under 3 free

Tips:

  • Go when it opens (9am) or mid-afternoon to avoid crowds
  • Rainy days = packed with the same idea
  • Ask at the desk for feeding times - way more interesting to watch
  • Bring snacks or plan for the small café
  • Stroller-friendly but tight in crowded areas

Battleship North Carolina

Address: 1 Battleship Rd NE (across the river from downtown) Best for ages: 6+ (younger kids won't get it and the climbing is challenging)

The real deal: The Battleship North Carolina is a WWII battleship you actually climb through. Nine levels of ladders, narrow passages, cramped quarters, gun turrets, engine rooms. Kids who like exploring, climbing, military stuff, or history will love it. Very hands-on - you're walking where sailors walked.

Time needed: 2-3 hours to see it well. Can rush through in 90 minutes but why?

Cost: Adults ~$14, Kids 6-11 ~$6, Under 6 free, Seniors/Military discounts

Tips:

  • Gets HOT below deck in summer - bring water, take breaks on the open decks
  • Wear closed-toe shoes (ladders, metal surfaces)
  • Not ideal for kids who struggle with climbing or tight spaces
  • Self-guided, so you go at your own pace
  • Open every single day, even Christmas

Honest kid assessment: Kids under 5-6 will struggle physically and won't understand the history. Ages 7-14 tend to love it. Teens vary.

Children's Museum of Wilmington

Address: 116 Orange St, downtown Best for ages: 2-8 (older kids will be bored)

The real deal: The Children's Museum of Wilmington has four floors of hands-on play - pretend vet clinic, boat building, art areas, music, outdoor garden with sandbox. It's play-based learning, not "look but don't touch" museum stuff. Kids can run around and interact with everything.

Time needed: 1.5-3 hours depending on how into it your kids get

Cost: Around $10/person (check current), members get benefits

Tips:

  • Rainy day gold - this is where everyone goes, so it gets crowded
  • Best on weekday mornings for less chaos
  • Outdoor area is nice when weather's good
  • Little ones can spend forever here; older kids (8+) will be done faster
  • Downtown parking applies - meter or deck

Honest assessment: Excellent for little kids. If your kids are 9+, skip it.

Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park

Address: 5320 Oleander Dr, Wilmington Best for ages: 5+ (varies by activity)

The real deal: Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park is a full entertainment complex - water park, go-karts, laser tag, mini golf, rock climbing wall, arcade, indoor playground. It's not one thing, it's like 8 things.

Water park section:

  • Wave pool, lazy river, slides
  • Open seasonally (roughly May-September)
  • Day pass pricing varies by season ($25-35 range for full day)

Dry activities (year-round):

  • Go-karts (height requirements apply)
  • Mini golf (~$10)
  • Laser tag (~$9)
  • Rock climbing wall
  • Arcade (pay per game)
  • Indoor jungle gym (good for little kids)

Time needed:

  • Water park alone: 3-5 hours
  • Dry activities: 2-3 hours
  • Full day: 6+ hours

Tips:

  • Can get expensive if you do multiple activities - check package deals
  • Water park gets crowded on hot summer days
  • Bring your own sunscreen and towels
  • Lockers available for water park
  • Food on-site but not great - eat before or after

Honest assessment: Kids love it. Your wallet might not. Good for birthday parties and "I need to exhaust my children" days.

Outdoor Activities

Carolina Beach State Park

Address: 1010 State Park Rd, Carolina Beach Best for ages: All ages

Why it's special: Carolina Beach State Park has Venus flytraps that grow wild here. Not in pots, not in a greenhouse - wild carnivorous plants in their native habitat. This is one of the only places on Earth where they naturally occur.

What to do:

  • Hiking trails: Multiple trails through different ecosystems - longleaf pine, marsh, coastal. The Flytrap Trail is where you'll find carnivorous plants.
  • Ranger-led walks: They do guided Venus flytrap walks - check the schedule at the visitor center. HIGHLY recommended because the plants are small and easy to miss.
  • Marina: If you have a boat, you can launch into the ICW
  • Camping: Sites available, reserve ahead for summer

Time needed: 1-3 hours depending on how many trails you do

Cost: $9 per vehicle OR free if you walk/bike in

Tips:

  • DO NOT pick or touch the Venus flytraps - it's illegal (state law) and harms them
  • Bring bug spray - it's swampy
  • Trails are sandy in spots - sneakers fine, don't need hiking boots
  • Combine with a Carolina Beach boardwalk trip for a full day

Airlie Gardens

Address: 300 Airlie Rd, Wilmington Best for ages: All ages (though toddlers might just want to run)

The real deal: Airlie Gardens is 67 acres of formal gardens, walking paths, lakes, and the famous Airlie Oak - a live oak tree that's over 450 years old. In spring, azaleas everywhere. There's also a seasonal Butterfly House where butterflies land on you.

What kids like:

  • The Butterfly House (open seasonally, usually May-September) - butterflies actually land on you. Magical for kids.
  • The giant Airlie Oak - climb on the roots, take pictures
  • Running around on paths
  • Feeding fish in ponds (sometimes)

Time needed: 1-2 hours for a casual walk, longer if you explore everything

Cost: Adults ~$9, Kids 4-12 ~$3, Under 4 free. Free on Tuesday mornings 9am-noon (verify current policy).

Tips:

  • Tuesday free admission is great but can be crowded
  • Butterfly House requires separate timed entry during busy times
  • Wear walking shoes - it's big
  • Bring water
  • Good stroller paths but some areas are unpaved

Special events: Enchanted Airlie during holidays = lights throughout the gardens. Tickets sell out fast, book early.

Greenfield Lake Park

Address: 1941 Amphitheater Dr, Wilmington Best for ages: All ages

The real deal: Greenfield Lake Park is a 250-acre park with a lake, cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, walking/biking trails, paddleboats, playground. It's the city's big park.

What to do with kids:

  • Paddleboats: Rent them on-site (~$15/hour). Kids love driving. Goes slow, can't really mess up.
  • Kayaks/canoes: Also rentable
  • Playground: Good playground area
  • Walk the loop: 5-mile trail around the lake. Flat, easy, stroller-friendly.
  • Feed the ducks: Kids will want to. (Bread is actually bad for them - bring seeds or duck food if you want to feed properly.)
  • Look for turtles: They're everywhere, sunning on logs

Time needed: 1-3 hours

Cost: Park is free. Rentals cost extra.

Tips:

  • Mosquitoes can be bad in summer evenings
  • Great sunset spot
  • The Greenfield Lake Amphitheater hosts concerts - sometimes family-friendly stuff
  • Bring a picnic

Indoor Backup Options (Rainy Days)

Sky Zone / Flip N Fly (Trampoline Parks)

Kid jumping on trampolines at Flip N Fly trampoline park in Wilmington NC

Locations: Sky Zone Wilmington and Flip N Fly

What it is: Wall-to-wall trampolines. Dodgeball courts. Foam pits. Kids bounce until exhausted.

Best for ages: 4+ (they have toddler times for little ones, usually weekday mornings)

Cost: ~$15-25/hour depending on time and day

Time needed: 1-2 hours (kids will be tired)

Tips:

  • Special socks required (buy there or bring grippy socks)
  • Sign waivers online beforehand to skip the line
  • Supervise little kids - big kids can be aggressive
  • Socks get gross - bring a bag for them after

Shipwreck Neon Mini Golf

Address: 1204 North Lake Park Boulevard, Carolina Beach, NC 28428 Phone: 910-636-3069 Best for ages: All ages (3 and under free with paid adult)

The real deal: Shipwreck Neon Mini Golf opened in summer 2024 and has quickly become one of the best rainy-day kid activities on the coast. It's two 9-hole indoor blacklight courses — the Shipwreck Course (pirates, pirate ships, walk the plank vibes) and the Under Sea Wonderland Course (sharks, octopus, sea creatures). The neon art is legitimately impressive — full murals glowing under blacklight, themed obstacles on every hole. Kids lose their minds.

Time needed: About 1 hour per 9-hole round. Plan on 1-2 hours if you're doing both courses.

Cost:

  • Kids 4-12: $7 for one round, $13 for both courses
  • Adults 13+: $9 for one round, $16 for both courses
  • 3 and under: FREE with paid adult

Tips:

  • FREE parking on-site (including additional spots behind the building) — huge win since parking at the beach is usually a nightmare
  • Last play starts at 8:45 PM, plan accordingly
  • ADA compliant throughout — adjustable shaft putters, low access curbing for wheelchairs, adult and junior size clubs available
  • Good rainy day backup if beach plans get washed out
  • Great for birthday parties — they host events
  • Indoor + blacklight = works year-round regardless of weather

Honest assessment: Worth it. Kids will want to play both courses. At $13/kid for both, it's a legitimately affordable hour or two of entertainment that doesn't rely on the weather cooperating. One of the better indoor options we've found in the area.

Dave & Buster's

Address: 953 Town Center Dr Suite #D150, Wilmington Best for ages: 8+ (younger kids will be bored by most games)

What it is: Arcade games, bowling, billiards, VR stuff, full restaurant and bar. National chain but new to Wilmington at Mayfaire.

Cost: Games run on Power Cards - easy to blow $30-50 per kid. Look for half-price game Wednesdays.

Time needed: 2-3 hours

Tips:

  • Set a game budget before walking in or wallets get destroyed
  • Parents can grab drinks at the bar while kids play
  • Food is standard bar food - fine, not great
  • Gets loud and chaotic on weekends

Good for: Older kids, teens, rainy days, birthday parties. Not worth it for little kids.

Bowling

Bowlero, Ten Pin Alley - standard bowling alleys with bumpers, arcade games

Best for ages: 4+ (bumpers help little ones)

Cost: ~$5-8/game plus shoe rental

Time needed: 1-2 hours

Tips:

  • Ask about family packages
  • Ramp devices available for little kids who can't lift the ball
  • Food is overpriced but convenient
  • Good rainy day activity

Movies

Regal Mayfaire, AMC Oleander - standard theaters

Tips:

  • Tuesday is often discount day
  • Matinees are cheaper
  • Some theaters do "sensory-friendly" screenings (lower volume, lights up slightly) - good for younger kids or kids who get overstimulated

Beach Days with Kids

Detailed beach info is in our beaches guide, but kid-specific tips:

Best beaches for families:

What to bring:

  • Sunscreen (reapply every 2 hours, more if swimming)
  • Shade (tent or umbrella - sun is intense)
  • Water and snacks (buying at beach is expensive)
  • Bucket/shovel for sandcastles
  • Boogie boards
  • Change of clothes for the car

Safety stuff:

  • Watch for rip currents - stay near lifeguarded areas in summer
  • Jellyfish happen - usually not serious but they sting
  • Teach kids to shuffle their feet in shallow water (avoids stepping on stingrays)

Seasonal Family Stuff

Fall

Pumpkin patches: Multiple pop up in the area - Lewis Farms, Tanner's Farms, and others. Typical stuff: pumpkin picking, corn mazes, hayrides, farm animals.

Pumpkins on the beach: Yep, this is a thing at Carolina Beach. People do beach photo shoots with pumpkins in fall. Very Wilmington.

Halloween events: Poplar Grove Plantation does Halloween events. Haunted trails, trick-or-treating. Aquarium does special programming.

Winter / Holidays

Enchanted Airlie: Airlie Gardens transforms into a holiday light spectacular. Walk through the gardens with lights everywhere. Hot cocoa, festive vibes. Tickets sell out early - buy as soon as they go on sale.

NC Holiday Flotilla: Lighted boat parade at Wrightsville Beach (usually day after Thanksgiving). Boats decorated with lights parade through the waterway. Watch from the shore. Free.

Spring

Azalea Festival: Wilmington's biggest festival (April). Parade, street fair, concerts, garden tours. Some events are kid-friendly, some aren't. Check the schedule.

Strawberry picking: Local farms open for u-pick strawberries in spring.

Kite flying: Spring winds + beach = kites. Carolina Beach sometimes has kite festivals.
