One of the most impressive examples of antebellum architecture in North Carolina, built 1859-1861. This 22-room mansion showcases Greek Revival and Italianate styles with ornate columns and period furnishings. Tours cover both the wealthy family's home and the restored slave quarters, providing an honest look at pre-Civil War life. Guided tours run regularly and take about 45 minutes. The gardens are also worth exploring.
