River to Sea Bike Ride: Complete Guide to Wilmington's Annual 20-Mile Ride
The River to Sea Bike Ride is one of Wilmington's longest-running cycling events - 36 years and counting. The route follows the historic Wilmington Beach Car Line from downtown Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach and back. It's not a race. All ages and experience levels ride, but you need to be able to handle 20 miles at a casual pace.
Whether you're a regular cyclist or dragging the family out for a Saturday morning ride, here's everything you need to know.
Schedule
Friday, May 1 - River to Sea Bike Ride Expo (NEW this year)
- Time: 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM
- Location: Empie Park
- What: Free bike checks, ride registration, merch purchases, and hangout with local cycling orgs. If you want your bike looked at before the ride, this is the move.
Saturday, May 2 - Ride Day
- 6:15 – 6:55 AM: Check-in and day-of registration (Princess Street, downtown)
- 6:55 AM: Ride announcements
- 7:00 AM: Ride departs
- ~8:15 AM: Arrive at Wrightsville Beach Park (turnaround point)
- 15–20 minute break at Wrightsville Beach Park
- ~8:30 – 8:35 AM: Ride departs Wrightsville Beach
- ~11:30 AM: Ride wraps up back in downtown Wilmington
Yes, that's a 6:15 AM check-in. Set your alarm. The ride leaves at 7 sharp with or without you.
The Route
The ride runs approximately 20 miles round-trip along the historic Wilmington Beach Car Line route - downtown Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach Park and back. The turnaround point is Wrightsville Beach Park (the softball field area), not the actual beachfront.
The route uses a mix of roads and multi-use paths. A downloadable route map is available on the official GoCoast event page.
What to expect on the road: The ride is not a closed-course race. You'll be sharing roads with vehicle traffic on portions of the route. Ride single-file where required, obey traffic signals, and stay aware of your surroundings. Helmets are mandatory for a reason.
Registration
Online pre-registration has closed. Day-of registration is available for $5, cash only. Bring exact change or small bills - don't show up with a $100 bill at 6:30 AM expecting change.
Check-in is at Princess Street and Second Street in downtown Wilmington. Day-of registration opens at 6:15 AM and closes at 6:55 AM. That's a 40-minute window. Don't cut it close. The ride typically caps pre-registration at 450 riders - day-of spots are available but show up early if you want to guarantee one.
Heads up: Bathrooms downtown will be limited. Go before you arrive. There will be port-a-johns at the Wrightsville Beach turnaround point.
Merch
River to Sea Bike Ride branded merch is available for purchase at both the Friday expo and on ride day:
- Socks: $12
- Water bottles: $10
- Stickers: $5
Cash or card accepted for merch (unlike registration, which is cash only).
Where to Park Downtown
You need to be parked and checked in before 7 AM on a Saturday in downtown Wilmington. It's early enough that you'll find parking, but 450+ riders are all arriving at the same time. Aim for 6 AM and give yourself a cushion.
Free options early Saturday morning:
- Street parking downtown is free before 9 AM on weekends in most areas
- Check signage - some blocks have restrictions
Paid lots:
- Several municipal lots within walking distance of Front and Princess Streets
- Rates vary but most are $1-2/hour or have a daily max
The smart play: Park near the intersection of Front and Princess Streets since that's where check-in and the ride start. Water Street parking deck and the lots along Front Street are closest.
Driving to Wrightsville Beach separately and meeting the group there is NOT how this works. Everyone starts and ends downtown.
What to Bring
Required:
- Helmet - non-negotiable, you won't ride without one
- Bike in working condition - get it checked at the Friday expo if you're unsure
Strongly recommended:
- Water bottle - 20 miles in May, you'll need it. Fill it before you leave
- Sunscreen - the ride starts at 7 AM but you'll be riding in full sun by 8
- Snacks - a granola bar or banana for the Wrightsville Beach break
- Phone + mount or pocket - for photos at the turnaround and in case of emergency
- Tire repair kit or spare tube - flats happen on group rides. Don't be the person who has to call for a pickup
- Layers - May mornings on the coast can be cool at 6:15 AM. Bring a light layer you can stuff in a jersey pocket once it warms up
- Cash - $5 for registration (if you haven't pre-registered), plus cash for merch or post-ride food
Optional but smart:
- Cycling gloves - 20 miles is a long time to grip handlebars without padding
- Sunglasses - riding east toward Wrightsville in the morning means sun in your face
- Bike lock - if you plan to hang at the beach after the turnaround or stop somewhere downtown after

What to Do After the Ride
You'll be back downtown by late morning, hungry, and running on adrenaline.
Breakfast/Brunch downtown:
- Hops Supply Co - brunch menu, good coffee
- Benny's Big Time - pizza brunch, unique vibe
- The Basics - solid breakfast spot on Princess Street
- Port City Java - quick coffee, multiple locations (and they're a ride sponsor)
Beer (it's before noon, you earned it):
- Front Street Brewery - right on the route, post-ride tradition for many
- Waterline Brewing - Cargo District, great outdoor space
- Wrightsville Beach Brewery - if you want to head back to the beach after

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a race? No. It's a casual group ride. All ages and experience levels participate. You need to be able to maintain a casual pace for 20 miles.
Can kids ride? Yes, but they need to be able to handle 20 miles. That rules out most kids under 10-12 unless they're experienced cyclists. Helmets required for everyone regardless of age.
Is the route flat? Mostly. Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach is coastal and relatively flat with a few overpasses. If you can ride a bike at all, you can handle the terrain.
What if it rains? Check the GoCoast Facebook page and Instagram for weather updates. The ride has run for 36 years - light rain usually doesn't cancel it, but severe weather might.
Is there a SAG vehicle? Check with GoCoast directly. If you can't finish the ride, you may need your own pickup plan.
Can I ride an e-bike? The official rules don't specifically address e-bikes. Contact GoCoast at (910) 341-4661 or gocoast@wilmingtonnc.gov if you're planning to ride one.
