What to Bring for the River to Sea Bike Ride

What to Bring for the River to Sea Bike Ride

The River to Sea Bike Ride is 20 miles round-trip from downtown Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach and back. It starts at 7 AM in May. You'll be riding in the morning sun along roads and multi-use paths for about 3 hours total. Here's what to pack so you're not miserable by mile 12.

Required (You Can't Ride Without These)

Helmet

Non-negotiable. The ride won't let you participate without one. If yours is cracked, sun-damaged, or older than five years, replace it before Saturday. A quality bike helmet like the Schwinn Intercept runs about $30 on Amazon - cheaper than the ER visit you're preventing.

Bike in Working Condition

Tires inflated, brakes working, chain lubed, gears shifting. If you're not sure, hit the Friday Expo at Empie Park (May 1, 3-7 PM) for a free bike check. Seriously - a flat tire at mile 8 on Eastwood Road is not where you want to discover your tubes are dry-rotted.

Bring These or Regret It

Water Bottle (Insulated)

20 miles. May sun. You need water. An insulated bottle keeps it cold past the turnaround at Wrightsville Beach. The $4 gas station bottle will be warm by mile 5. A HydraPak Breakaway Surge gets you a 2-pack for about $21 on Amazon and fits standard cage mounts.

Sunscreen

The ride starts at 7 AM heading east. By 8 AM you're riding back west in full coastal sun. Apply before you leave. Blue Lizard SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen is about $10, water resistant, and won't drip into your eyes when you sweat.

Snacks

The turnaround at Wrightsville Beach Park is a 15-20 minute break. That's your refuel window. A banana, a granola bar, a pack of energy chews - whatever works for you. Don't rely on finding food at the turnaround point. Pack it yourself.

Cash

$5 for day-of registration (cash only). Plus a few extra bucks for merch or post-ride food.

Phone

For the route map, photos at the turnaround, and emergencies. A Lamicall handlebar phone mount is about $16 and keeps your phone accessible without fumbling in your pocket at 15 mph.

Smart Adds

Tire Repair Kit

A spare tube, tire levers, and a mini pump. Flats happen on group rides, especially on shared roads with debris. The alternative is standing on the side of Park Avenue waiting for a pickup while 300 riders pass you. A portable bike repair kit with a pump runs about $22 on Amazon and covers everything.

Cycling Gloves

20 miles of gripping handlebars without padding means numb hands and sore palms. ATERCEL cycling gloves are about $12 and make a real difference on anything over 10 miles.

Sunglasses

You're riding east toward Wrightsville Beach in the morning. Sun will be directly in your face. A 3-pack of polarized sport sunglasses runs about $14 on Amazon and cuts the glare.

Light Layers

6:15 AM on the coast in early May can be 55-60°F. By 9 AM it's 75°F. Wear a light wind layer you can strip off and stuff in a jersey pocket or strap to your handlebars.

Chamois / Padded Shorts

If you don't ride regularly, your backside will hate you by mile 10. Padded cycling shorts (or padded liner shorts you wear under regular shorts) are the difference between a fun morning and three days of soreness.

Bike Lock

If you want to hang around downtown or Wrightsville Beach after the ride, you need to secure your bike. A Sportneer combination bike lock is about $13 and no key to lose.

Skip These

Full cycling kit - this isn't a race, nobody cares what you're wearing. Shorts and a t-shirt work fine.

Backpack - awkward on a bike for 20 miles. Use jersey pockets, a saddle bag, or a handlebar bag instead.

Speaker - please don't be the person blasting music on a group ride.
