Fort Fisher State Historic Site

One of the largest and most important Confederate forts of the Civil War. Walk the massive earthwork remains and visit the free museum explaining the history. The fort protected Wilmington - the last major Confederate port - until falling in January 1865 after one of the war's largest naval bombardments. Impressive grass-covered mounds with interpretive signs. Visitor center has artifacts and fiber optic battle map. Free admission. Near the aquarium and Southport ferry. Allow about an hour.
