Triptychs for Victory: World War II Altar Paintings
On the cusp of World War II, professional artists were commissioned to design artwork for religious services on military installations, Naval ships, and in the field. The Citizens Committee for the Army and Navy answered the call from Chaplains to provide religious symbolic beauty for their divine services. The result was an extensive program to provide 3-piece altar paintings or triptychs. The first one was created for the USS North Carolina and lives in the Battleship’s collections.
